Privacy notice
smartmove needs almost nothing from you: no account, no name, no email address. This page sets out exactly what your browser sends, where it goes and how long it is kept.

Who runs smartmove
smartmove (smartmove.property) is an independent, non-commercial project run by one person. There is no company behind it. For this notice, that person is the data controller. You can reach them at hello@smartmove.property.
The short version
- You do not need an account, and smartmove never asks for your name, email address or any other details.
- Your searches and calculations are sent to smartmove's own service only to work out the answer. They are not stored afterwards.
- Google Analytics runs only if you accept it. Until then, nothing is requested from Google.
What your browser sends, and why
Searches and calculations
When you search for a postcode or a place, or use a calculator or comparison, your browser sends that input to smartmove's service at api.smartmove.property. The service needs it to look up the answer and send it back. It does not keep your inputs, link them to you or build a history of what you searched.
To answer, the service passes only what is needed to these public data services:
- postcodes.io receives the postcode you searched, to find its area.
- Open-Meteo's geocoding service receives the town or place name you searched, to find its location.
Answers from these services may be cached for up to a day so repeated searches are faster. The cache holds the public answer, not who asked.
Your IP address
Every website sees the IP address of the device that visits it. smartmove's service uses it only to limit how often one connection can make requests, which protects the service from abuse. The address is turned into a one-way code straight away, using a secret that changes every day, so it cannot be traced back to you or linked across days. The raw address is never stored or logged. Service logs are kept for no more than 7 days.
The site and the service are hosted by Cloudflare, which processes connection data to deliver and protect them. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Cookies and storage
smartmove uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are useful, but only if you choose "Accept analytics". If you reject it, or make no choice, the Google tag is never loaded and no analytics cookies are set.
If you accept, Google sets these cookies on smartmove.property:
- _ga
- Tells visits apart. Expires after 2 years.
- _ga_Y2JC4E22C0
- Keeps the state of your current visit. Expires after 2 years.
Google then receives the pages you visit (their address without the settings after a question mark), roughly where you are (city level, worked out from your IP address, which Google Analytics 4 does not store), your device and browser type, and the site that sent you. Google signals and advertising features are switched off, so this is not used to show you adverts. Google acts as smartmove's processor and may handle the data in the United States, under the UK–US data bridge and Google's data processing terms. Analytics data is deleted after 14 months at most.
You can change your choice at any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page. Rejecting removes the analytics cookies. You can also use Google's opt-out browser add-on.
Your browser also remembers your analytics choice in its local storage, so you are not asked on every page. This is needed to respect your choice and is not used for anything else. Calculator settings live in the page address, so a link reproduces your scenario. They are not stored anywhere else.
The legal basis
- Answering your searches and calculations: legitimate interests (providing the service you asked for).
- Rate limiting with a hashed IP address and short-lived logs: legitimate interests (keeping the service secure and available).
- Google Analytics: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of personal data held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to its use, or withdraw consent. smartmove keeps almost nothing that could identify you, so there is usually nothing to return. Requests are still answered: write to hello@smartmove.property.
If you are unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, telephone 0303 123 1113.
Children
smartmove is a general information site and is not aimed at children.
Changes
If what smartmove does with data changes, this notice will change first, and the date at the top will move. If the change needs your consent, you will be asked again.
